Reading with Dyslexia

Reading does not come naturally – it is an activity that must be taught. For children and adults with dyslexia, it can seem like an impossible challenge to learn to read.

Dyslexia is a neurological condition  that affects a person’s ability to learn how to read.
Auditory dyslexics have difficulty associating sounds with letters and thus have trouble expressing words of text.

Visual dyslexics have trouble developing a site word vocabulary, meaning they must laboriously decode words.

Nevertheless, both auditory and visual dyslexics  can achieve success in reading with the proper tools and training. When dyslexic children are taught in a way that suits their special needs, they succeed to learn to read well. Today, we know how dyslexic students need to be taught and the earlier a child is diagnosed with dyslexia, the better.

  • If you notice your child is struggling with learning to read, have them evaluated. The earlier you identify dyslexia, the easier it is to overcome.
  • Dyslexic students require special instruction to overcome reading barriers. There are many books, workbooks, software programs and online programs that can help a dyslexic child or adult learn to read.
  • Give your child a reading test at home to find out if they may are ready to learn to read or may show signs of dyslexia.
  • For almost any child struggling to learn to read, a multi-sensory program is recommended. A reading program for dyslexic learners should be systematic, cumulative and allow for plenty of reading skills practice.

In general, for any child that is struggling with reading, it is important to provide them with the support they need to succeed. Reading is the single most important skill they will learn in school. It is the basis for everything else they will do in their education. So take it seriously. If they need help, it’s available!
